Alter-Is in LRH-Books: New Slant on Life

The here reported alter-is in the CST-version of 1997 was already done in the 1992 version of the book.

Andreas Groß

Levi Murphy Confront23@aol.com wrote in COSinvestigations@egroups.com :

It is my duty as a scientologist, as it is all scientologists, to insure the PURITY of Rons words by reporting any alter-ising which is discovered.

An apparent descrepancy of tech has occurred in an actual rewrite of New Slant on Life. It's titled "L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology, A New Slant On Life" by L. Ron Hubbard LIBRARY, Copyright 1988, 1997 in comparison to LRH's original text titled "Scientology, A New Slant On Life" by L. Ron Hubbard, Copyright 1965, 1972.

I've documented EIGHTY-SEVEN alter-ises in NSOL.

Nine Missing Chapters

The first major alter-is is in the Copyrighted 1988, 1997 altered version of NSOL which is totally MISSING the following nine chapters from the original text of NSOL (Copyright 1965, 1972) ;

1. The Reason Why
2. The Conditions of Existence
3. Myths of the Mind
4. The Man Who Succeeds
5. On Death of the Consciousness
6. Accent on Ability
7. Freedom vs Entrapment
8. The Human Mind
9. Communication

None of the Scientologists I know have a clue about these deletions and are quite surprised when I tell them. Here we have a widespread area of tech ommission and yet NO mention of this is anywhere to be found in the 1988, 1997 NSOL. There is a hidden data line about these ommissions. The changes should have been announced publicly via an editorial note.

List of 87 specific Alter-Is or Outpoints by number .

(Paragraph # (P#))

1) The 1972 edition says on the title page that "This edition contains several corrections, made under the direction of author to the earlier version; it also adds "Myths of the Mind", replacing an extract from Science of Survival."

The 1988, 1997 squirrel version OMMITS the very chapter "Myths of the Mind" that apparently Ron had ordered according to the 1972 edition on its title page. For some reason, the alter-ised version offers no editor explanation as to why all the previous nine chapters are now entirely missing. It's left as a total mystery. This causes major ARC breaks with those who find out it's different than Ron's original text. It has with me. I will now go on to show EXACTLY, chapter by chapter, what has been
alter-ised. 1) is the ORIGINAL text BY Ron himself, and and 2) is the new "L. Ron Hubbard Library" version.

1) By L. Ron Hubbard version
2) alter-ised L. Ron Hubbard Library version

Chapter 1 "Is it Possible to be Happy?"

Paragraph 1 (P1)

Eliminated semi-colon and created a new sentence

P5

1) his "how" of life
2) his pleasure in life

P6

1) one's attitude toward
2) one's attitude toward (no italics)

(Note: One may at first think that altering italics or punctuation is petty but the correct punctuation is also how authors can have "voice inflection" in their writings. Comma's can create pauses, or emphasis, Capitalization can show a broader meaning like "Man" encompassing man and women, verses "man" . )

P7

1) nice home, and
2) nice home and [missing comma]

1) movies, and
2) movies and [missing comma]

1) mother
2) Mother (capitalized)

P15

1) universe is to him no longer a problem, he
2) universe is, to him rather a pawn; he

1) the science of Scientology
2) the religious philosophy of Scientology

[Note: Tt appears Scientology is degraded as no longer a science. It's been devalued as such above. Scientology 8-80 defines Scientology as "the science of acquiring knowledge." "A true science, which Scientology seeks to be, makes predictions from its observations, and in turn, predicts new observations which give new and better theories, more observations, more predictions, etc." ]

Chapter 2 "The True Story of Scientology"

P4

1) The politician, the reporter, the psychiatrist with his electric shock machine, the drug manufacturer, the militarist and arms manufacturer, the police and the undertaker, to name the leaders of the list, faten only upon "the dangerous environment.

2) The politician, the reporter, the medico, the drug manufacturer, the militarist and arms manufacturer, the police and the undertaker, to name the leaders of the list, faten only upon "the dangerous environment.

[Note: "the medico" in the altered version replace "the psychiatrist with his electric shock machine,"

P5

1) incomes, force, and power
2) incomes, force [missing comma] and power

Chapter 3 "Two Rules for Happy Living"

Third Chapter is out of sequence in squirrel version, has "Mans Search for his Soul" instead

P1

Second Rule for happy living (at the very beginning) is altered .

1) Cause only those things which others can experience easily.
2) Cause only those things which others are able to experience easily.

P5

1) down hill
2) downhill [no separation]

P12

1) hodge-podge
2) hodgepodge [missing dash]

Chapter 4 "What is the Basic Mystery?"

Fourth Chapter is out of sequence, has "The ARC Triangle" instead

P2

1) hot potatoe, because
2) hot potatoe. Because

P3

1) and Man's general
2) and man's general

1) - who is he?
2) - Who is he?

1) that -- "who
2) that: "Who

P4

1) "science"
2) science [italisized, missing quotes]

1) truth
2)"truth" [quotes, missing italisization]

P5

[two missing comma's]

P6

1) From the time since I first made a theta clear*, [gave definition of theta clear]

2) agent that we have. [added word]

P13

1) Scientology is the science of knowing
2) Scientology is the subject of knowing how to know. [New
definition? Why is science changed to subject?])

[NOTE: Again, the altered book drills in (for the second time) that Scientology is no long a science, but now just a "subject." Isn't the alter-is a technical degrade? 1979 Tech Dictionary Definition #1 defines Scientology as: SCIENCE OF KNOWLEDGE. I've noticed since Ron's death, other refs. to Scientology being a SCIENCE are getting deleted from publications. See changed SCIENCE definition in What is Scientology? 1978 compared to the deletion of Science definition in the 1993 edition]

1) man IS his own immortal soul
2) man is his own immortal soul

P13

[missing comma]

Chapter 6, "The Reason Why"

Missing Data. I can't compare this chapter to the squirrel version because in the altered version, this great chapter on life and games mysteriously dissappears. Instead, "What is the Basic Mystery" is Chapter Six of the squirrel version (which is Chapter 4 in the earlier "by L. Ron Hubbard" version.)

[I will no longer document comma's and puntuation changes but I just want to let it be known that the apparent squirrel book is loaded with changes that can potentially alter LRH's intended inflection.]

Chapter 7, "What is Knowledge"

This chapter is out of sequence in the squirrel version and placed in
chapter 25

P1

1) Knowledge is certainty;
2) Knowledge itself is certainty; [added word]

[NOTE: In the altered version, the conclusion of the answer to the problem of uncertainty is totally MISSING. What the original "by L. Ron Hubbard" version says at the tail end of this chapter is .

"Such a state can be remedied. One merely causes the individual to observe in terms of the three universes."

(This key datum above is MISSING from the squirrel version.)]

Chapter 8, "The Conditions of Existence"

Missing Data. Again, I can't compare this chapter to the altered version because in the altered version, this great chapter on the three conditions that comprise life (BE, DO, HAVE) has mysteriously dissappeared. It's no longer in the book. Instead, "The Dynamics of Existence" is Chapter Eight of the altered version which is not even found in the "by L. Ron Hubbard" version. Perhaps it's just coincidental that the chapters SOUND simular.

Chapter 9, "Myths of the Mind"

Missing Data. Here again, I can't compare this chapter to the altered version because in the altered version, this great chapter on the curse of past pretence "knowledge" is totally gone from the squirrel version even though it was Ron's wish and he directed to ADD this important chapter. (It mentions this in the beginning of Ron's real version.)

Chapter 10, "How To Live With Children"

P9

The following words are emphasized where Ron's writing are not. The altered version italicized the following words in paragraph 8 . "must remain under his exclusive control", "none of your business", "on purpose."

ALTERED SEQUENCE

The 11th and 12th paragraphs (from the "By L. Ron Hubbard" original version) are missing in the squirrel version in those same paragraphs and are not found until the 21rst and 22nd paragraphs.

P15

1) The transition period will be difficult.
2) The transition period will be terrible.

1) well-ordered, sociable child,
2) well-ordered, well-trained, [added word] social [changed word] child,

[NOTE: Please realize the differences in meanings between sociable and social. They are NOT the same.]

Chapter 12, "The Man Who Succeeds"

Missing data. Again, I can't compare this chapter to the squirrel version because in the altered version, this great chapter revealing the ingredients of success have also mysteriously dissappeared. Instead, "Acceptance Level" is Chapter Twelve. This Chapter is not found in the "by L. Ron Hubbard" version.

Chapter 13, "On Death of Consciousness"

Missing data and altered sequence. Again, I can't compare this chapter to the altered version because in the altered version, this great chapter on reason and survival have also mysteriously dissappeared. Instead, "Confronting" is Chapter Thirteen of the altered version which is Chapter 17 in the "by L. Ron Hubbard" version.

Chapter 14, "Accent On Ability"

Missing data. Again, I can't compare this chapter to the altered version because in the altered version, this great chapter on What is Life, Understanding, ARC, and Start, Change, Stop. This chapter has also mysteriously dissappeared. Instead, "On Bringing Order" is Chapter Fourteen of the altered version which is not in the "old" by L. Ron Hubbard" version.

Chapter 15, "Honest People Have Rights too"

ALTERED SEQUENCE. This is the natural follow-up to the missing previous chapter (Accent On Ability) which begins with "After you have achieved a high level of ability, ." I believe Ron intended to write the book in the exact order that he did. This chapter in the altered version is down in Chapter 28.

Chapter 16, "Acceptance Level"

ALTERED SEQUENCE. This is Chapter 12 in the altered version.

P3

1) Acceptance Level
2) acceptance level [lower case can devalue importance]

Chapter 17, "Confronting"

This is Chapter 13 in the squirrel version.

1) second dynamic* [gives definition on page]
2) second dynamic [missing asteric and no definition given on the page or in the index or dictionary in back. This creates a M.U. for the public.]

Chapter 18, "On Bringing Order"

This is Chapter 14 in the altered version.

No Alter-isnesses found in this chapter

Chapter 19, "On Human Character"

ALTERED SEQUENCE. This is Chapter 16 in the squirrel version

TEN instances of the word "Man" not capitalized in the whole chapter.

P10

1) Love-Hate universe
2) love-hate universe

Chapter 20, "Past, Present, and Future"

(Chapter 17 in altered version)

No Alter-isnesses found in this chapter

Chapter 21, "Playing the Game"

(Chapter 18 in the squirrel version)

P2

1) DIFFERENTIATION
2) differentiation

P2

1) IDENTIFICATION
2) identification

[NOTE: I know that when Ron capitilizes a word, he does it to drive home hard it's importance. As a writer myself, I know that capitalizing SHOUTS for IMPACT. That's the way Ron writes. If he had wanted italics instead, he would have written it that way in the first place. Italics in the squirrel version above makes LESS of what Ron says. It's looks like effort to make nothing from something, bringing the words down just a little on the importance scale by italicizing it instead of CAPITALIZING]

P8

1) game THEY wanted to play
2) game they wanted to play

1) "Stop playing YOUR game".
2) "Stop playing your game".

Chapter 22, "Freedom vs Entrapment"

Altered Sequence. Missing data. Again, I can't compare this chapter to the altered version because in the altered version, this beautiful chapter on Freedom is totally missing. There are no Chapter titles about freedom in the altered version, yet this is what Scientology is all about . Total Freedom. "The Race Against Mans Savage Instincts" is the 22rst chapter of the altered version.

Chapter 23, "Justice"

ALTERED SEQUENCE: This is Chapter 24 in the altered version

Chapter 24, "The Vocabularies of Science"

ALTERED SEQUENCE: This is Chapter 19 in the altered version

Chapter 25, "How to Study a Science"

No Alter-isnesses found in this chapter

Chapter 26, "The Human Mind"

Altered Sequence. Missing data. Again, I can't compare this chapter to the altered version because in the altered version, this chapter on the mind is totally absent. "Man from Mud" is the 26th chapter of the altered version.

Chapter 27, "Records of the Mind are Permanent"

ALTERED SEQUENCE: This is Chapter 21 in the squirrel version

Chapter 28, "Communcation"

Altered Sequence. Missing data. Again, I can't compare this chapter to the altered version because in the altered version, this detailed chapter on communication which explains why communication is a senior datum is totally missing. There are no Chapter titles about communication, yet communication is such a basic subject in Scientology and is the resolution of all problems. This is the last chapter of the "by L. Ron Hubbard" version.

"Honest People Have Rights" is the 27th chapt. of the altered version.

The following Chapters are ONLY in the new altered version .

1) ARC Triangle
2) Happiness and Interest
3) The Dynamics of Existence
4) The Anatomy of Failure
5) Professionalism
6) Playing the Game
7) The Race Against Mans Savage Instincts
8) The Third Party Law
9) Man from mud
10) The Psychiatrist at Work
11) You Can Be Right
12) What is Greatness

Summary

New "Lessons" taught to me from the 1988, 1997 altered New Slant on Life

1) Psychiatrists are no longer the leading Merchants of Chaos. Medicos took their place.
2) Scientology is not a science. It quit being one after Ron died.
3) It seems to be ok to allow publication of alter-is's in newer

versions of Ron's books.

These flagrant 87-points of apparent RAMPANT Alter-Is are MAJORLY destructive to scientology tech. No doubt that because of these descrepancies, EVERY single Scientology publication REALLY needs to be SINCERELY checked for purity of LRH.

I hope that all scientologists agree that these out-points are not good.
Next question is ... what and how are we going to do something about it?
...

VERSION ONE vs VERSION TWO

(1) Excerpts from 1965 edition of
Scientology: A New Slant on Life
Author: L. Ron Hubbard

(2) Excerpts from 1997 edition of
Scientology: A New Slant on Life
Author: Church of Scientology International, Employer for hire

(1) Actually a little child derives all of his "how" of life from the grace he puts upon life.

(2) Actually, a little child derives all of his pleasure in life from the grace he puts upon life.

(1) They're looking for something, but the odd part of it is, the only time they ever find something is when they put it there first. Now, this doesn't sound very plausible, but it's quite true.

(2) They're looking for something, but the odd part of it is, the only time they ever find something is when they put it there first. Now, this doesn't seem very creditable, but it's quite true.

(1) And here you have somebody who is happy, who is cheerful, who is strong, who finds that most things are pleasurable; and what do we discover in this person? We find out that he is making life, and here is actually a single difference: are you making life or is life making you?

(2) And here you have somebody who is happy, who is cheerful, who is strong, who finds that there is something worth doing in life, and what do we discover in this person? We find out that he is making life, and there is actually a single difference: Are you making life, or is life making you?

(1) Of course, you will have difficulty if this child of yours has already been trained, controlled, ordered about, denied his own possessions. In mid-flight, you change your tactics. You try to give him his freedom. He's so suspicious of you he will have a terrible time trying to adjust. The transition period will be difficult. But, at the end of it, you'll have a well ordered, sociable child, thoughtful of you and, very important to you, a child who loves you.

(2) Of course, you will have difficulty if this child of yours has already been trained, controlled, ordered about, denied his own possessions. In mid-flight, you change your tactics. But at the end of it, you'll have a well-ordered, well-trained, social child, thoughtful of you and, very important to you, a child who loves you.

Not only are there subtle contextual changes in the book, there are eight (8) chapters that were in the original edition which have been completely expunged from the current edition. But there are 12 new chapters that were not in the original book. Could some or all of these be the "some text" that is referred to in the Library of Congress abstract?

Despite these changes, there is no mention anywhere on the outside packaging, or in any of the advertising, that would alert a potential buyer of the book.

And it may be far bigger than just this one book.

"New Slant on Life" is just one amongst at least 913 titles in Library of Congress records with the author listed as "Church of Scientology International, employer for hire." The "new matter" for many of those works includes writing, editing, and compilation, strongly suggesting that they each have been changed in some way from the original works. You may be surprised at some of the titles on that list (including the venerable "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health"), so we selected a few samples from the Library of Congress records and put them here on the site.

That much above was quoted from VERITAS.
