Commentary and LRH References on Tone Arm Action

One of the most vicious efforts to sabotage case gain inside the Church, is the subject of tone arm action. We will show how that has been done and we will teach the correct way to audit.

Adequate Tone Arm Action = 6 or more divisions per hour
Adequate Tone Arm Action = Case Gain
Consistent Adequate Tone Arm Action = O.T.

The technical fact is that adequate tone arm action and case gain are the same thing.

The only purpose for giving an auditing session is CASE GAIN.

Therefore, the only purpose for giving an auditing session is TONE ARM ACTION.

Another technical fact is - consistent adequate tone arm action is how you make an O.T.

- - - - - - -

The 1988 Church of Spiritual Technology squirrel version of the book E-Meter Essentials has added this false datum:

An acceptable minimum of Tone Arm motion is 2.5 divisions per hour of auditing.

That false datum does not appear in the original LRH book E-Meter Essentials.

Here is a quote from HCOB 25 September 1963 Adequate Tone Arm Motion:

Amount Per Session ------- Session Rating

25 Divs -----------------------Excellent
20 Divs -----------------------Good
15 Divs -----------------------Acceptable
10 Divs -----------------------Poor
5 Divs ------------------------Unacceptable
0 Divs ------------------------Harmful

The above quote shows the amount of tone arm motion for a 2 ½ hour session.

Now let’s look at the Church of Spiritual Technology datum that 2.5 divisions per hour is an acceptable minimum. That datum says that 6.25 divisions per 2 ½ hour session is an acceptable minimum. That datum is false, it takes 15 divisions of tone arm action per 2 ½ hour session to qualify as being acceptable.

Another quote from LRH Tape Lecture 20 August 1963 The Itsa Line:

- but it’s certainly getting a whole tone arm division every ten minutes, and that’s pretty fair tone arm motion, see? And that’s acceptable. I wouldn’t buy much less than that myself – tone arm division every ten minutes. Well, that’s just barely, marginally acceptable, see, to produce this phenomena.

In the above quote LRH states that 6 divisions of TA per hour is the lowest acceptable amount of TA action in a session. So, the Church of Spiritual Technology datum that 2.5 divisions per hour is acceptable, is false.

Here is another quote from HCOB 1 October 1963 How To Get Tone Arm Action

Until they understand this one point, an auditor will continue to get minimal TA and be content with 15 divisions down per session – which in my book isn’t TA but a meter stuck most of the session.

In the above quote Ron makes it clear that 15 divisions of TA per session is minimal.

Here is another quote from HCOB 13 April 1964 Tone Arm Action

A case must not be run without tone arm action or with minimal TA action.

Here is another quote from HCOB 1 October 1963 How To Get Tone Arm Action

Result – 9 divisions of TA in 2 ½ hours, pc laden with by-passed charge.

The above quotes shows the Church of Spiritual Technology intention to sabotage case gain by teaching a suppressive false datum that 2.5 divisions of TA per hour (6.25 divisions per session) is acceptable. That false datum is gross out tech as it teaches auditors that it is ok to run a case with minimal tone arm action.

The importance of adequate tone arm action cannot be overstated. That is how an O.T. is made.

Here are a couple of LRH references that say that:

HCOPL 30 July 1963 Current Planning

Research-wise O.T. is wrapped up. The length of time in processing is long. But this is offset by the fact that IF YOU GET CONSISTENT TA ACTION THE CASE WILL EVENTUALLY MAKE O.T.

LRH Tape lecture 6 August 1963 Auditing Comm Cycles

Providing you can keep the tone arm moving, the person will eventually go Operating Thetan.

If the tone arm is not moving, the person will not go Operating Thetan. If you just keep a tone arm moving on the pc long enough, regardless of how and what you’re auditing on the case, the case will eventually make OT.

The CST false datum that 2.5 divisions of TA per hour is acceptable, does not appear in any LRH references. That means some suppressive had to manufacture it. Why would someone go to the trouble to invent this false datum and put it into the E- meter book?

That false datum, if followed, would completely wipe out case gain for everyone, from the bottom of the bridge to the top. And, since TA action is the very thing that makes an OT, following that false datum would ensure that no O.T.s are made.

Going back to our Evaluation on why the Church was taken over….

In the interest of national security, the takeover happened to prevent anyone going OT.

Ah ha! Now we see why that suppressive datum was manufactured and taught to auditors!

If your purpose as an auditor is to deliver case gain and make an OT – master this subject.

It is the auditor’s job to produce as much TA action as possible in a session. It is his hat.

Following are some selected LRH quotes on the subject of tone arm action:

LRH Tape Lecture 6 August 1963 Auditing Comm Cycles:

On your E-meter you have a tone arm. Force is removing itself from the case as long as that tone arm is in motion. Providing the TA is moving – providing the TA is moving and you get good motion out of your tone arm – a person will eventually go Operating Thetan. If the tone arm is not moving, the person will not go Operating Thetan.

Now, this is right down to bedrock on the subject of auditing. Your job is to keep the TA moving.

Now, what’s this TA doing? The TA is indicating the blowing off of force.

And your most fundamental method of making a tone arm move is not running a process. It is the basic definition of an auditor: a listener. The basic way to let a tone arm – get a tone arm move is to listen, and that is the fundamental of auditing.

Now, somebody could probably talk for a thousand years and never say the right things, and you wouldn’t get any tone arm motion. But, similarly, how many pcs talk and get tone arm motion from doing so and are shut up or cut off by the auditor? Ha-ha-ho-ho-ho.

An auditor is somebody who listens with tone arm action.

Let the pc talk and let him talk with tone arm action. And let them talk as long as they want to talk and let them talk as long as you can get tone arm action by their talking. Where did you get so industrious? If I could sit there for two and a half hours with the pc telling me all about early track engrams and its this way and that way, and I’ve got a TA that is banging here from 2.5 to 4.25, back and forth and back and forth, I’m afraid I would just sit there. And I know some of you sit and acknowledge. Oh, no. I wouldn’t shut that off. I’d just sit there and look intelligent. But all you’d have to do is let the pc start talking about his backtrack and get tone arm action and never give an auditing command. Start and end sessions; that’d be all there was to the auditing session.

E-Meter Drill 8

The Tone Arm is moving; do nothing.

The Tone Arm is not moving; do something.

E-Meter Drill 10

That which blows down the Tone Arm will produce Tone Arm motion.

LRH Tape Lecture 20 August 1963 The Itsa Line:

And you get no case advance in the absence of tone arm action. That is – that’s it! I mean, there aren’t any ifs, ands or buts about it. No tone arm action – no case advance!

I don’t care if you erased a somatic, I don’t care if he has ceased to have lumbosis, I don’t care about any of these things – because you’re not auditing a body. As far as this pc is concerned – no tone arm action – no case advance.

The longer you run a case without tone arm action, the more you will freeze the case into no tone arm action.

So, it’s not just "Well he’s running without tone arm action," and brush it off, you see? It’s "Oh, my God! He’s running without tone arm action! Whew. Huh. Hey, hey hey! No tone arm action! Hey, hey, hey! No tone arm action. Get some tone arm action. Ha-ha." You know? It gets that type of emotional response, you know?

Guy running without tone arm action is somebody you’re watching go down the big toboggan.

Given enough tone arm motion on any given subject, and that subject will right itself in the head of the pc.

Knowing the idea about tone arm action, you sit there and this pc babbles on and on and on, and it doesn’t have anything to do with anything you can see, but my God, that tone arm is moving. Pc talking about his grandmother’s jam making. This is about as aberrative, don’t you see, as petting the pup. But, my heavens, you’re getting tone arm motion on it, man. You’ve tried something else and gotten a stuck tone arm, so let’s let him go on, see?

PC leaves the session feeling fine – feeling fine, wonderful. PC always makes gains if they have tone arm motion, see? If they have real tone arm motion, they always make gains. If they don’t have tone arm motion, they don’t make gains. So this becomes burningly necessary to produce tone arm motion. At any cost, produce tone arm motion.

Now, the adroitness with which an auditor can use the little attention line to put the pc’s attention into areas that can be explored, that are easy enough for the pc to see into, that will produce tone arm action … is a very skilled auditor. …you put his attention on things that can be identified by him, and which will therefore unsnarl the thing called a problem or the bank or that aberrated area.

And it’s the degree that you can obtain tone arm action – that you can do that – that marks the skill of the auditor. That is the most skilled center and zone of auditing.
